Chess 960

Chess 960 is varient of chess where the initial backline pieces are randomised subject to:

  • The Bishops are on opposite colours
  • There is a Rook either side of the King (for castling)

Take a look at the chess board to see possible variations.

Castling

When castling either kingside or queenside, the King and Rooks always end on the same place they would have done if playing classical chess. This means the king can jump more than two squares!

Venue

Kelvin West Church, Glasgow (West End)

Taking the subway to the chess Subway

Kelvin West Church is a 5 minute walk from Hillhead subway station.

Taking the bus to chess Bus

Bus routes which go to the University Campus (the 11 or 44 from the city center), or routes which go through Great Western Road, Dumbarton Road or Byres road.

Driving to the chess Car

Parking is at Kelvin Sportshall or Lillybank gardens. Alternatively, there is a park and ride service at Sheildshall subway station.

Taking the train to the chess Train

There are two main train stations in Glasgow, Queen Street Station and Central Station. After getting to either, taking the subway is the easiest way to reach Wellington Church.

Cycling to the chess Bike

NextBikes operates within Glasgow, allowing you to cycle from one hire point to another. There is a dropoff point on the University of Glasgow Campus.
